The Thread of a Dream

by Denis WaitleyWhen I was researching the history of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge as a major illustration for the ideas of success and motivation, I became engrossed with the story of how the first bridge was built over the Niagara River near Niagara Falls. You see, to build a bridge over a giant gorge, first you have to get a line over the canyon, from one side to the other. Easier said than done at Niagara Falls.

The engineers couldn't cross the river in a boat to take the line from one side to the other because the boat would go over the falls. And the airplane hadn't been invented yet. The distance was also way beyond the bow-and-arrow range, which had been a common method at the time of getting the first line across to build a bridge.

The designing engineer, Charles Ellet, pondered the question until he came up with a revolutionary idea. He decided that, while solving the problem, he would also have some fun and generate some publicity for the project. Ellet sponsored a kite flying contest and offered five dollars to the first person who could fly a kite across the gorge and let it go low enough to the ground for someone to be able to grab the string. In 1849, five dollars was a prize similar to a small lottery today. The boy who won the prize relished his accomplishment until his death, nearly 80 years later.

It all began with an idea and one thin kite string. The kite string was used to pull a cord across, then a line, then a rope. Next came an iron-wire cable and then steel cables, until a structure strong enough to build a suspension bridge was in place.

I'm struck by how that string is like a single thought. The more vivid and clear the thought, and the more you come back to it, the stronger it becomes—like the string to the rope to a cable. Each time you rethink it, dwell on it, or layer it with other thoughts, you are strengthening the structure on which to build your idea, like building a bridge over Niagara Falls. Ways to Independence for Nigerian Youth

It is evident nigerian youths need more than political leadership to solve our problems. In the military era when we were rule by maximum rulers under various draconian decree we thought a civilian government we solve all our problems, but with more than ten years of democracy it is evident to the contrary that the salvation of nigeria youths cannot come from the political leadership of this nation.

Many of us have great hope and expectation in government of the nation to provide health for all, Education for all, housing for all, everything for all by the year 2000. But the miracle year have come to pass, but we are still hoping against hope. This is a confirmation of the saying of Henry Ford the great industrialist that "Our government cannot help us, we are the one that can help our government". A good student of history will know that leaders all over the world in the past are selfish and self centered. Even in the scripture the prophet told Israel the type of leaders they will have ""And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day." (1 Samuel 8:18). America, Australia, New Zealand and Boar of South Africa moved away from europe due to the tyranny of their kings. Even Pope of old are know for their suppression of people with contrary opinion tagged heretic.

It is crystal clear that no government can help anybody be they civilian, military, democracy or what have you. But individual must rise and fight for their own independence. And stop waiting for handout from the government. It is time we take personal responsibility for our life and stop depending on external influence in determine the course of our life. Depending on ourselves give us sense of control while depending on other make us helpless because we are subject to their whim and caprice.

It is high time we task our brain for solution to our problems by helping solving other people problem for in solving other people problem our own too is solved. Henry Ford solved transportation problem for American and the whole world and he will leave forever as long as there is sun. Dangote helped solved Nigeria cement, sugar, salt, pasta problem. American President Roosovelt said "Don't think of what America will do for you, but what you will do for America" Jesus Christ said "he that want to be the leader should serve" and Zig Ziglar said "Help enough people solve their problem and thereby solve yours". There are still so many problem that need to be solved, common mosquito portend a problem that cause fever and producing insecticide will solve the problem. Hunger problem is still there farming of any type will solve such problem.

Most youth will tell you they don't have capital, but nobody always have capital to start with. Your own will not be different. What you need is a sound idea with adequate plan that can guarantee profit for you and the return to capital employed. Don't start with a big venture, start small and grow big. Capital will always flow toward good idea because capital itself does not want to be idle it need returns over time or less it will be devalue. Also capital at times is not cash as some of us think, they are majorly inputs and all supplier want to sell their products. Whatever you are producing will require a raw materials which has producer. If you rightly position yourself you can get suppliers who will grant you credit and if you are faithful, people will trust you with better inputs.

Let every Nigeria youth steel themselves and quit coddling and stop waiting for non existing help from a helpless government and look unto themselves and to their creator who has endowed them with talent.
